Union's National Negotiating Committee Resumes Talks, Sets Aggressive
Schedule
Teamsters Win Major Agreement at UPS/Freight 2006 CONVENTION
UPS TEAMSTERS RESPONDING TO BARGAINING SURVEY
OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORT EARLY CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS
The following is from Ken Hall, Teamsters Parcel and Small Package Division Director:
Results have just come in from the 2006 UPS Teamsters
membership bargaining survey, and we are working on a detailed analysis of
the returns. However, we would like to inform you that by a margin of 89
percent, UPS Teamsters responding to the survey have indicated that they
want us to enter into early negotiations. Now that our members have spoken,
our next plan of action will be to convince UPS to come to the table early.
We will be providing you with more information on those efforts next week.
UPS MENLO - CARTAGE As promised Local 89 has negotiated with UPS to make the new Menlo operation, now known as Cartage, part of the Air District. This is historical because Louisville is the only place in the country to pull Menlo under the UPS Contract. All work at the Menlo building will be Air District Work. Below is a list of highlights from the agreement.
Ø No off the street hires until part time Air Cargo list is exhausted. As a result 1,000 new jobs created. Ø All GSE, Housekeeping and Belt Maintenance will come from Air District (no subcontracting) *UPS will build GSE shop for 400 new fork lifts Ø All future full-time 22.3 jobs will be bid to existing full-time Air District employees o Because of 22.3 language part time jobs must be put in first. o No Menlo employees will be brought to full-time Union jobs. Ø All existing Full-time Air Cargo employees will be moved into the new building on their original bid workweek and time.
A TOTAL OF (53) TWO-DAY AND (33) 1-DAY FULL-TIME JOBS WILL BE CREATED THIS SPRING
(We had originally negotiated 65 full-time jobs with 15 being day
jobs and have since increased that by an additional 21 for a total of 86
with 53 being day full-time jobs.) NO MORE REDCIRCLE ON SIX-HOUR JOBS, WILL BE TIED TO FULL-TIME AT 2-TO-1
FULL-TIME BID SYSTEM WILL BE STREAMLINED FOR AIR DISTRICT 1) DQ’s will count as second bid. 2) DQ’s will count as a move (in bid process) toward job going to part-timer. 3) Employee will have five days to DQ.
The first round of full-time jobs in the cartage operation is presently
being posted. The first 4 have gone up with 17 more to follow shortly.
BIDS FOR CURRENT AIR-DISTRICT FULL-TIME UNION EMPLOYEES (EXCLUDES MECHANICS) Below is a preview of new full-time jobs. A few are presently being bid with the majority being posted in June. When these jobs are bid, they will be awarded in the order in which they are ranked. This will ensure that an employee that has signed up for more than one job gets the best position for his/her seniority. When the jobs are available for bid, they will be posted at the guard shacks (APFE and Ashbottom), Cartage and AMDC. Once posted, employees wishing to bid will use the computer application to do so.
86 Total jobs By Organizer Kevin Evans The Stewards who attended the meeting, which included Lenny Evans, Ed Sageser, Shannon Hamilton, Don Cummings, David Wise and Craig Burns are now better prepared to educate injured workers of their rights and make sure they receive all the benefits they are entitled to. Teamster employees at UPS are required at some point to be examined by a company doctor, but they are also entitled to seek medical attention from a doctor of their choice, some times even before seeing the company doctor. Local 89 encourages all UPS employees to notify their Steward, and the company, as soon as possible when they are injured on the job. Again thanks to all who participated and also a special thanks to Ched Jennings for his time and commitment to help those injured on the job. E.R.I. has become a hot topic in the Air District. After conversations with the company, the Union was told this is voluntary. as a result, there should be no retaliation or harassment on any employee wishing not to participate. If any member feels intimidated or harassed they should follow the grievance procedure steps and language of Article 37 of the National Agreement Union Fights Against Injustice on the Job
By Business Agent Paul McIntosh
In Bowling Green, two members were terminated under Article 17, Section A. The union was able to get both reinstated. Thanks to Stewards Ron Carpenter and Joe Durbin and Matt Marple. At the Bluegrass Center a member was discharged under Article 17, Section 1. The Union was able to get the discharge reduced to suspension. Thanks to Stewards Darrell Hall and Lynn Weately. Also, in Bluegrass the company over deducted Union dues. The Union got the dues reimbursed and four hours of penalty pay each. At the Ashbottom Center a member who was fired under Article 17, Section F was returned to work thanks to the work of Stewards Dave Simmons, Ed Wilkey and Chris Carter. Great work Guys! At the Campbellsville Center A driver was discharged under Article 17, Section D. The company agreed to reduce the suspension Thanks to Steward Scott Townley I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all Stewards for their hard work in representing our Union's membership. Its a tough job with little reward - and each of you deserves a job well done!
