  • Today a retirement celebration was held at the AMDC facility at UPS Worldport. The three recently or soon to be retired members included James Spriggs, Dan Karrer and Rob Arnold, all of whom have been at UPS for at least forty years. Arnold is number one overall in seniority for all of UPS Worldport, and was a day one hire when the UPS Air District was first created in 1981.

On Friday, November 18th, workers from Caesars Southern Indiana represented by Teamsters Local 89, Unite Here Local 23, and Operating Engineers Local 399 participated in a picket training exercise on Main Street in New Albany, Indiana.

Ronnie Johnson was a proud Teamster member at Fire King, and an influential part of the recent strike at that Company. Sadly, just a short time prior to the strike being won Ronnie suffered from a severe stroke that left him in the hospital. Last Saturday morning, Ronnie tragically lost his battle for recovery and passed away.

It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the dreadful news reports of a death at UPS Worldport last night. While we will refrain from sharing specific details or names out of respect to the deceased and their family, it is true that a young member tragically died by suicide. Although we do not know the cause behind this heartbreaking decision, our Local Union grieves for this terrible loss.

Union representation at UPS Worldport is about to expand with the addition of Jay Dennis as a Business Agent for multiple areas in the Air District. Jay will be taking over as the Agent for Wings C, D, E and Grade Lane Shift on the Next Day Air operation, and for the World Freight Facility on Second Day Air. He will also be taking over as the union chair for the Worldport Shuttle Committee.

On September 23rd Teamsters Local 89 members at Canteen Compass unanimously ratified a new three-year agreement. Economic highlights of the new agreement include improved commission rates, faster vacation accrual, two additional paid holidays, a higher shift premium, improved holiday pay, higher hourly rates and improved pay on Saturdays and Sundays.

Today, Teamsters at Louisville Packaging unanimously rejected a “Last, Best and Final Offer” haphazardly thrown out by the Company via email late Saturday evening.  In addition, the membership voted unanimously to authorize an Unfair Labor Practice strike in response to bad faith bargaining by the Company.
