First announced yesterday, February 13th, on a Teamsters Transition Update call with General President-Elect Sean O’Brien, Teamsters Local 89 is proud to share that Avral Thompson will be the next Carhaul Division Director.
Avral currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 89 and was elected to his second term as Central Region Vice President on the General Executive Board in the November 2021 election of International Officers. Avral has been a member of Local 89 since 1984 and has been the long time Business Agent for Carhaul members in our jurisdiction. In the early 2010’s, Avral worked alongside President Fred Zuckerman to win back the jobs of hundreds of Teamsters at the Ford LAP plant as well as 23 million dollars in backpay – one of the largest settlements in NLRB history.
“I’m honored to have been selected as the next Director of the Teamsters Carhaul Division,” said Thompson. “Carhaul has long been a core Teamsters industry. I look forward to working with Sean, Fred, Officers and Rank-and-File members to tackle the problems we face head on.”
“Local 89 is the largest Carhaul Local in the Teamsters and there are no non-union Carhaulers within our jurisdiction,” said President Fred Zuckerman. “We maintain that with militance, and that attitude is what Avral will bring to the Carhaul Division at the International.”
The Carhaul national contract expires in June, and the new division will mobilize to push for major improvements. The O’Brien-Zuckerman administration, as well as their appointees, will take over the International Brotherhood of Teamsters when they are sworn in on March 22nd.
