Local 89 has continued to operate throughout this unprecedented time and was not subject to complete closure by the Governor of Kentucky’s March 22nd, 2020 Executive Order. In fact, the Executive Order allowed Local 89 agents, officers and staff to continue to engage in Critical Labor Union Functions and Minimum Basic Operations on behalf of Local 89 and its members. In accordance with Governor Beshear’s subsequent April 28, 2020, announcement allowing restricted “in-person” business operations due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Local 89 has taken every available measure to protect members who may choose to visit us at our union hall offices during daily operations. As was stated in our June 2020 Membership Meeting Notice, the health and safety of our membership is our number one priority during these uncertain times.
It has now become very clear that certain required crowd size and social distancing restrictions --established in the Governor’s Executive Order-- will prevent the Local Union from having our June 2020 General Membership meeting within the union hall. Specifically, the Executive Order prohibits gatherings of ten (10) or more attendees until June 29th, when that number will increase to prohibit gatherings of fifty (50) or more – neither of which is sufficient. Unfortunately, no viable alternative accommodations (outdoor venue, video conferencing, etc.) could be realistically achieved in order to facilitate the large number of anticipated attendees at the membership meeting. Logistical concerns such as outdoor sound quality and ability for members to freely participate in the membership meeting in an online environment were just a few of the concerns when weighing alternatives. Therefore, after careful consideration, the Local Union Executive Board has determined it is in the best interest of the Local 89 membership to postpone the June 2020 membership meeting. Again, the health and well-being of our membership is our highest priority at this time. At this time the Local Union Executive Board reasonably believes that the dangers associated with spreading or contracting COVID-19 through a large gathering (such as the membership meeting) are far too great to hold the meeting at the union hall. And, when coupled with the absence of any viable alternative meeting arrangements, it is apparent the only option is to temporarily postpone the June 2020 membership meeting until it can be reasonably held without posing serious health and safety risks to our members. Rest assured the Local Union Executive Board will reschedule the June 2020 meeting as soon as it receives adequate assurances from local, state, and/or federal authorities that the inherent risks have been reduced and the Governor has modified the present social distancing limitations and restrictions on gatherings.
