It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the dreadful news reports of a death at UPS Worldport last night.

While we will refrain from sharing specific details or names out of respect to the deceased and their family, it is true that a young member tragically died by suicide. Although we do not know the cause behind this heartbreaking decision, our Local Union grieves for this terrible loss. To all of those affected, our hearts go out to you as you mourn.

When a tragedy such as this occurs, it is up to the rest of us to better our society in the hopes of saving lives from suicide in the future.

In the aftermath of a suicide, family and friends often wrack themselves with guilt, wondering if there was some way they could have intervened to cause a different outcome. This is in part what is responsible for suicide to often be stigmatized as a selfish choice, or even a cowardly “way out”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Suicide is, in fact, often the result of deep, underlying mental health issues that a person tragically succumbs to. Whereas we are more accustomed to death from illnesses of the body, mental health issues like depression and anxiety are illnesses of the mind that can tragically end a life just as assuredly.

Fortunately, just like many physical illnesses, mental health issues can be treated. Whether through medication, therapy or both, millions of Americans who suffer from these conditions are able to cope with them by seeking help. Mental health issues are not a weakness and should not simply be ignored. No one should ever feel ashamed for asking for help, it is an illness just like any other and needs to be treated as such.
