On Sunday, May 5th, Teamsters Local 89 members at Ryder South & Jeffersonville ratified a new three-year agreement containing major wage increases, language improvements, and more. The ratification comes after a previous “Last, Best and Final Offer” from the Company was unanimously rejected.
Following the previous rejection, Teamsters Local 89 President Avral Thompson joined negotiations to help push the Company in the right direction. The Company moved on wages on the final day of talks, but not enough for the Local 89 committee to make a yes recommendation. President Thompson informed the Company that a strike was imminent if the members rejected the new offer. Late on May 4th, just prior to the scheduled vote, the Company contacted Local 89 and agreed to further wage increases.
“Ryder agreeing to increase wages less than twenty-four hours before the vote is just another example of why a credible strike threat is key to winning a strong contract,” said Thompson at the conclusion of the vote count. “When the Company knows members are ready to take to the streets, they’re a lot more likely to agree to their workers’ demands.”
Among the economic improvements were impressive first year wage increases of 8% for technicians and 4% for service technicians, increases in boot and tool allowances, and the day after Thanksgiving added as a holiday. For non-economics, language was added for new hire orientations, a steward being present during the bidding process, and several positive changes to grievance and arbitration procedures.
Teamsters Local 89 would like to thank Business Agent Trey McCutcheon, and Stewards Steve Ragains and Mark King for their service on our negotiating committee. Their knowledge, dedication, and passion for their shop and fellow members were instrumental in winning this strong contract. Special thanks to the IBT Industrial Trades Division and Director Rocco Calo for their assistance during the closing days of negotiations.
From President Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer Cooper, and everyone at Teamsters Local 89 – congratulations to our members at Ryder South & Jeffersonville on your new agreement!
